homepage-logoThe right compression sock can change the way you work out and will totally blow your  mind!  You will feel an extra burst of energy as oxygen is pumped through your blood avoiding leg soreness, swelling, and fatigue.

 

The down low on compression from my friends at PODsox:

“The basic purpose of  graded compression is to improve venous return to your heart, which decreases leg fatigue and leg swelling, as well as helping to prevent blood clots (Blood clots are not as much of an issue with running, but definitely with prolonged sitting and flying.)
Quick Anatomy Lesson:
The heart is a muscular organ that pumps blood away from itself via the arteries.  Arteries have muscular walls that help the blood get where its going (your arms, legs, organs, brain etc.)  Once the blood has delivered oxygen to the tissues, it is reabsorbed and returns to the heart via the veins.  Unlike arteries, veins do NOT have muscular walls to pump the blood along its way.  Veins depend on the ‘back pressure’ from the arteries and heart to create the force to return blood to the heart.
Why this matters:
PODsox provide graded compression, which means they are tighter at the calf and looser at the ankle, providing an external ‘pump’ assist to the veins to return blood to the heart.
 For running, this means the blood gets back to the heart faster, which can decrease the sensation of fatigue. Compression socks worn during running also physically limit the muscle’s ability to swell, which allows the muscle to put more energy into linear movement, thereby increasing/improving the muscle’s efficiency.
 After a tough workout, muscle breakdown can occur.  Our body rushes nutrients (via blood) to the area, which can cause swelling.  Even fairly mild swelling can squish the veins (as well as the lymph system) and makes it difficult for the blood to get back to the heart. Wearing compression socks for recovery helps pump this swelling out, which decreases the amount and length of time soreness is present.
When we are sitting for an extended amount of time, gravity causes blood to ‘pool’ in the non-muscular veins because we are not moving sufficiently to create our own pump.  Any time blood sits still for very long, it begins to form a clot.  This creates a problem in that it blocks the healthy/moving blood from returning to the heart, as well as if the clot comes loose, it can get into the tiny vessels of the heart, lung brain etc. and cause severe problems, even death.   For reasons not entirely known to science, flying can intensify the possibility of this happening as well.  Wearing true graded compression such as PODsox helps keep blood traveling back up toward the heart, preventing the swelling, pooling and clotting.
