Training for a 5K

I finally gone and done it!  I successfully and officially signed up for a 5K.  Personally, I am not a physical person and I never liked running.  Living in Florida, I have always blamed it on the heat factor, but its mostly me just being lazy.  That, and I am way out of shape. I mean since I have had children my body just has not been the same.  I’m sure you can relate.   Of course, even with my youngest peeking age 8 I still have a ton of baby weight to lose.  HA!  I need something to blame it on.  But seriously, it is time to make a change and join in the boisterous and rewarding fun of running alongside my kids in a Run Disney event.  My children started participating in benefit runs this year.  A few months back they ran the Brickdash 5K at Legoland, FL and since then have signed up for two 1 mile kid races and a 5K for Run Disney.  I don’t want to miss out on the fun (although, waiting at the finish line can be entertaining,)  I want to be in the middle of all the action.  I have a desire to be exhilarated and get pumped full of adrenaline. Who am I kidding…I’m ready to run out of breathe and force my kids to drag me across the finish line; all while wearing an awesome runners costume.  lol   So yeah, inspired by my children, I signed the whole family up for the Princess 5K  and we will conquer every mile together.  I am looking forward to all the fun that awaits us!   BUT, of course I need to start training; my body is in no way ready to run a 5K in it’s current shape and form.  While my daughter was on vacation in NC with the rest of the family I started a training program called 5K Run.  This is an app that you can download to your smartphone and it is set up with weekly sessions that build your momentum and make you 5K ready in 9 weeks.  Each week you will have three run sessions scheduled that will alternate walking and running patterns.  The first session ended unsuccessfully.    I finished half of the 25 minute walk/run exercise.  I was defeated by the summer heat and a dog who doesn’t know how to walk/run on a leash properly.  This was a low for me, but very expected.  Day 2-4 I have completed with no major issues.  I do find it hard at times to keep going, but thinking of how awesome it will be to run side by side with my son and daughter in February pushes me to keep going.  As you complete each week you will discover your run exercises become longer and you spend less time waking.  It builds up slowly so that you are able to complete the challenge overtime.  If you ever feel like you need to start over you can go back to an early session.  I plan on completing my nine weeks and starting all over from the beginning over and over again  til I know for sure that  I can do this.  I will keep updating ya’ll with my status.  I took a break tonight, but will pick back up on session 5 tomorrow. I highly recommend this app for all newbies like me.  Hope to see you on race day!

Part of your world*

Running in a Disney event has been on my daughter’s bucket list for sometime now.  It is so exciting that we can make this dream come true over and over again.  One of her favorite characters is Ariel from the Little Mermaid.  So, it was only fitting that she would want to run the Princess 5K in an Ariel Run costume.

This mermaid will join the runners world February 2017.  The tee was found at Hot Topic.

crownEvery princess needs a crown!  Thank you to Melody at Milestones Jewelry on Etsy for the complimentary crown that makes this princess sparkle.   Melody is an avid runner .  She started started running Marathons about 9 years ago to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma in memory of a friend who lost her battle with this cancer. She has  run 8 full marathons, 26.2 miles and countless, Half marathons, 5K’s, 10K’s, Adventure races and Warrior Dashes.   After working 30 years in the corporate world it was time to make a change and follow her passion.
After  completing her first marathon Melody made a rope anklet with silver block letters “26.2” and a runner girl charm. Friends and fellow runners started requesting to purchase similar running and Triathlon Jewelry for Birthdays and to commemorate Milestones in their own lives. So on a 20 miles training run with a friend, Melody came up with the name Milestones Sports Jewelry and a basic business plan.  This was the beginning of her new journey.  “Not in my wildest dream did I think the business would become as successful as it has. We now have a thriving business through this store on Etsy, and our main website as well as many retail and wholesale accounts and selling at Triathlon and Running Expos. We have extended our business to include a great line of Fashion Apparel targeted to runners and Triathletes as well.
I hope you will enjoy shopping in our Etsy Store! I think you will find our jewelry, Apparel and accessories to be unique, and original pieces perfect to commemorate your Milestone accomplishments and to give as thoughtful and memorable gifts for your running and Triathlete friends.” (Tabman, 2016)

On a first hand basis I can tell you Melody and her team are dedicated to delivering the highest quality in jewelry for your next run and quality customer service.  Her personal goal is complete customer satisfaction.

skirt It is the skirt that completes the look!  You can find this Ariel Skirt and so much more at Rock City Skirts.  Amy Maust is the artist behind the sparkle skirts and she started designing them as a fundraiser.  She was running the Chicago Marathon to raise money for clean water on Team World Vision.  The skirts raised over $800!  Her skirts are so admired that she was asked to make more and was led to open Rock City Skirts.  “People kept asking me if I would make more and told me I should go into business.  I refused.  I am a Certified Public Accountant and I wanted to do bookkeeping/ taxes from home.  Well…..after enough people told me to start a business (even if it’s not the business I had in mind), I took it as a sign that I should listen. Rock City Skirts came to life and started selling skirts over the internet and on Etsy at the end of November 2012.”  (Maust, 2016)

The shop includes many Disney themed skirts and headbands.  Amy and her team of super talented sewers are also open to custom designs.  So, if you do  not see what you are looking for you can work together to customize your very own sparkle skirt.

The Making of a Run Disney Costume

We have runners itch!!!!  And yes we are super excited about it!  Since running the Brickdash in April my children have been looking to sign up for any and every kid race available.  Of course, this means Run Disney is on our list!  In fact my kids have already signed up for the Wine and Dine and Mickey Kid Races and we are crossing our fingers to sign up for the Princess 5K in Feb 2017.  So much goes into preparing for these events and in preparation I mean making the perfect run costume!  It is important that the costume be light and easy to run in, but also be super, super fun and unique.   So after searching high and low and all around Etsy we have finally put together piece by piece the perfect ensembles.

Here are a few of our Run Disney Costumes that will be worn in future events this year:

The perfect Prince Run costume for boys!

When creating your costume it is so important to think comfort.  You do  not want to wear something that is heavy, thick, and drags…you will never be able to finish the race in that!  Think light and airy.  And do not forget to make it fun!  Stick to a character or theme and let your imagination run wild, we did!

A big thank you to all my sponsors!  Tullelips and Ties, MMEMBRODIEREDGIFTS, Mile Stones Jewelry, and Rock City Skirts for providing the complimentary pieces from your Etsy shop’s for our costumes.  Please come back tomorrow as I share more about these Etsy sellers and a few of  my favorite pieces from their Etsy shops. Also…I will be sharing the perfect way to display your run medals and hosting a giveaway sponsored by…SportHooks when the fun continues!!!
