5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories- a book review

Reading to my children has become a cherished pastime each and every night.  As a family we take turns reading together and acting out the scenes in the book.  It has become my favorite part of our bedtime ritual.  Our ritual begins in prayer, followed with a bible story; then we read a few books selected by my kids, lastly, one of my children will lead us in a bedtime family prayer.  _240_360_Book.1928.coverThe 5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories, as retold by Charlotte Thoroeby is a book that gets selected every night by my son.  He loves to read about Jesus and your child will too!  In this book your child will enjoy reading 26 short stories from the Creation to Jesus’ Birth and many more!  Pages are full of brightly colored illustrations and large format; making this book easy and enjoyable to read by kids of all ages.  I love that the short stories are set up as mini devotions (a great introduction for your littlest human) with a question, a small prayer, and even a scripture verse.  You will also find additives in the back of the book including: The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, a listing of all the books in the Bible, and words to Anna B Warner’s Jesus Loves Me.  This is a great way to share the stories of Jesus with your little one and is guaranteed to be a family favorite that can be read at anytime of day!

Wonder Works Orlando

orlando-facade

This weekend my children and I had the opportunity to visit Wonder Works Orlando.  Thank you to Erica Lewis for the complimentary passes.  This upside down building has made it’s home on the corner of International Drive and Pointe Orlando.

But wait!  Why is this building upside down and where did it come from???  Well, as legend has it, the world’s greatest scientists- led by Professor Wonder- were given the task of creating a man- made tornado and harnessing the POWER of it.

During this experiment, something went awry and the power of the tornado was unleashed throughout the laboratory. This created a swirling vortex that was strong enough to rip the laboratory from its foundation.  It was carried thousands of miles away and landed upside-down on the top of a brick warehouse in Orlando, Florida. Remarkably, all of the experiments remained intact and functional.

hurricane-shack-300x263There is so much to experience once you have entered this structural phenomenon.  Experience hurricane strength winds up to 74 miles per hour, test your ability to survive freezing cold waters as cold as 28 degrees!, challenge yourself on the bed of nails, or break out in the bubble lab!  All the exhibits are a must try and super fun for all ages.  Be sure to give yourself plenty of time to go through the exhibits that are spread throughout three floors.  Our experience lasted 5 hours, but it was extremely packed inside due to the weather, so some exhibits had longer wait periods.  In fact, it was so busy when we arrived that Thea one of the ticket agents was yelling out to the crowd, “Close my door!  You have a three to four hour wait for all exhibits; you might as well leave!”  My daughter and I were just like WOW!  This was not a very good first impression and did not make us feel very welcome.  We also had issues in the basement on the third floor where the arcade games and Laser tag are located.  Many of the games would not operate correctly after we put the token in the slot.  When we asked for help we waited 10 minutes before having to ask the attendant a second time if someone could help us.  After the game attendant gave us our tokens back, we tried another game and had the same issue.  This was a bit disappointing, however we still had a very enjoyable time at the Wonder Works.  We spent about thirty minutes playing in the Bubble Lab where we made bubbles large enough to cover my daughter from head to toe.   Many bubbles and much laughter was made in the lab.  We ventured off to the Mind Ball where it was a race to the finish line.  Our minds controlled the ball and it moved based on our mind activity.  I won, wahoo!  From there we just bounced from exhibit to exhibit.   So much to do from Virtual Sports to the Astronaut Training Challenge.  This was the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon with the family.  Please also take note that the glasses used at the Hurricane Shack and 4D  XD  Motion Theater are not cleaned in between use.  I watched the attendants take the glasses from riders, place them in a bucket and pass out the same glasses to new riders.  We quickly got out of line for fear of getting pink eye or worse.  This is a major health concern to me and gave me the heebie jeebies.   All in all we had a lot of fun experiencing the mysteries behind Wonder Works and my children thought  Laser Tag and the Bubble Lab were pretty cool!

Bring Your Bible to School Day- October 8th! reblogged from Focus on the Family

Reblogged from Focus on the Family.  Not my original work.  Sharing Bring Your Bible to School Day.

The Bible Should Be Celebrated—Not Banned!
Focus on the Family. Focus on the Family.
Students Shouldn’t Have to Hide Their Faith

A teacher “humiliates a fifth grader for reading the Bible during free reading time.”

“A student is fighting for students’ rights after a public high school banned them from praying, singing Christian songs, and discussing religious topics during their free time.”

“One couple says their daughter was banned from reading the Bible at school. … The alleged Bible ban isn’t sitting too well with parents.”

Ready to Wed
Do you know students with a heart for God’s Word? Then they’ll love Bring Your Bible to School Day, a free-speech event for students on Oct. 8sponsored by Focus on the Family.
Download your free, get-started guide today!
That’s just a small sampling from television reports we’ve seen within the last year about students being censored or punished for their faith. Do you agree with us that students shouldn’t be forced to hide their Biblical beliefs when they walk in the school door?

The fact is, they do have the religious-freedom right to bring their Bible to school and read it during free time.

But the good news is, you can be a part of empowering and encouraging Christian students:

Let them know about Bring Your Bible to School Day™ on Oct. 8!

Last year, an estimated 8,000 students participated in every state in the nation. This year at least three times that many are expected to participate!

Will you be a part of making this a nationwide movement?

On this special day, students—from kindergarten to college—will celebrate religious freedom and share God’s hope with their friends. Help spread the word by taking three easy steps:

  1. Sign up; then share this link with other students and their families:FocusOnTheFamily.com/BringYourBible. Let them know that we’ve created Elementary, Teen and Pastor/Parent Editions of the downloadable guides.
  2. Share sample announcements with church leaders so they can let the youth in their congregation know about it.
  3. Join the conversation! Like us on Facebook® and follow us on Twitter®; VisitBringYourBible.org.

Thank you for your heart for empowering Christian youth across the nation and for working with us to protect religious freedoms for future generations.

Summer BBQ’s just got easier!

Grilling just got easier thanks to GrillFella’s and their BBQ Wok.  Now you can grill veggies safely over the BBQ without that charcoal taste ruining the flavor of your food.  Simply place the GrillFella Wok directly on the tray of the Grill and fire away!  Use can also use the Wok to separate your finer meats on the grill.  The wok is available in silver and copper and sold on Amazon.  I received a complimentary wok in exchange for an honest review.  I think this is a great product and it does make it easier to grill more items on the BBQ for family parties.  I have some picky eaters that will not eat anything if it has touched something else and now I dont have to worry about that.  I simply prepare their food in the wok away from all the rest.

Christmas Eve in the kitchen

Happy Christmas Eve!  If you are still in the kitchen whipping up all your favorite family traditional goodies, you may try one of these recipes.  I spent my morning making Jam Thumbprint Cookies and Pretzel Hugs.  These are two of our family traditional baked goodies.

jam

Jam Thumbprint Cookies:

2/3cup butter/margarine (I like to use slightly softened unsalted butter)

1/2 cup sugar

2 egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 slightly beaten egg whites

1 cup finely chopped walnuts if desired

1/3 cup of strawberry preserves

1. Grease a cookie sheet; set aside.  In a large mixing bowl beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on medium-high speed, for 30 seconds.  Add the sugar and beat till combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally.  Beat in eggs yolk and vanilla till combined.  Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer.  Stir in remaining flour.  Cover and chill dough for about an hour or till easy to handle.

2.  Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Roll balls in egg whites, then in walnuts.  This recipe can be done without the walnuts.  Place 1 inch apart on the cookie sheet.  Press your thumb into the center of each ball.  This is a good time to get the kids involved and allow them to press their thumbs into the center of the ball.  Bake in oven for 10-12 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit or till edges are lightly browned.  Transfer cookies to wire rack and let cool. Once cool fill centers with jam.

Pretzel Hugs:

Simply place pretzels on a lined cookie sheet (lined with wax paper.) Place a piece of chocolate on pretzel.  I like the Bliss white chocolate.  Place in oven on 350 degrees for 10 to 20 seconds.  Just long enough for the chocolate to glisten.  This is the start of the chocolate softening.  Take out of the oven and place a second pretzel on top of soft chocolate and push down.  Let cool and enjoy!
