Storybook Aprons

Bonjour, good day!  With fall in the air mornings are definitely not the same here in the Spoonley household.  I am finding myself baking away in the kitchen making yummy tummy treats for my lil humans.  Have you tried the grey stuff?  Oh my Disney, it is delicious!  If you haven’t, then keeping reading I will share the recipe.

My kids call me the clean baker, I tend to wipe up my lil messes and spills as I mix.  My motto is, “clean as you live.”  What can I say, my OCD gets the best of me.  I also like to wear an apron as I sway back and forth in song watching as my sweets rise in the oven.  But who says an apron should only be worn in the kitchen?!

The Grey Stuff Recipe

Ingredients
  • 1 small pkg (3.4 oz) Instant Vanilla Pudding Mix
  • 1½ cups milk
  • 15 Oreos
  • 1 small tub Cool Whip (8 oz)
  • 2 TB Instant Chocolate Pudding Mix
  • Sprinkles
Instructions
  1. In a medium bowl, combine pudding mix and milk. Whisk well and refrigerate for 10 minutes.
  2. Place Oreos in a food processor and blend until they become crumbs.
  3. Mix the crushed Oreos in with the pudding mixture and mix well.
  4. Fold in Cool Whip and chocolate pudding mix until well combined and refrigerate for one hour before serving.
  5. When ready to serve, place “grey stuff” in a piping bag and add a dollop to the middle and then pipe a spiral around it. Top with sprinkles.
  6. ENJOY!

Free Your Cookie of the Bad Stuff with Among Friends Baking Mixes

Among Friends Baking Mixes were created by two friends, Suzie Miller and Lizann Anderson in an effort to design a mouthwatering cookie that wasn’t packed full of harmful ingredients.  The baking mixes are handcrafted using gluten free whole grain oat flour, baking soda, sea salt, and other all natural ingredients.  These sweet gals provided me with a complimentary sample of Phil’ em up Chocolate Cranberry cookie mix to taste test at my most recent house party.  I was surprised at how easy it was to prepare and my guests (including the kids)  absolutely loved the taste.

Among Friends Baking Mixes make baking in the kitchen easy peasy!  I just love the easy to tear package and all you need are three added ingredients!

Add one egg, 1 tsp Vanilla, 4 Tbsp Soft butter.  We substituted coconut oil for the butter.

Mix all the ingredients together.

Make lil balls  (1 inch) and place 2 fingers (2 inches) apart on cookie sheet.

So easy to prepare, even the lil fingers can help!

Preheat oven to 350.  Bake in oven for 7-8 minutes

And you will have yummy yummy yummy cookies!

024Mmmm….there is nothing better than super yummy hot chocolate in 75 degree weather…and we certainly know how to make it scrumptious down here in the South.

My son snuck in my room and used me as a pillow while he played quietly on his video game.  He was trying not to wake me up.  Shhh!

Christmas Eve in the kitchen

Happy Christmas Eve!  If you are still in the kitchen whipping up all your favorite family traditional goodies, you may try one of these recipes.  I spent my morning making Jam Thumbprint Cookies and Pretzel Hugs.  These are two of our family traditional baked goodies.

Jam Thumbprint Cookies:

2/3cup butter/margarine (I like to use slightly softened unsalted butter)

1/2 cup sugar

2 egg yolks

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

2 slightly beaten egg whites

1 cup finely chopped walnuts if desired

1/3 cup of strawberry preserves

1. Grease a cookie sheet; set aside.  In a large mixing bowl beat butter or margarine with an electric mixer on medium-high speed, for 30 seconds.  Add the sugar and beat till combined, scraping sides of bowl occasionally.  Beat in eggs yolk and vanilla till combined.  Beat in as much of the flour as you can with the mixer.  Stir in remaining flour.  Cover and chill dough for about an hour or till easy to handle.

2.  Shape dough into 1 inch balls. Roll balls in egg whites, then in walnuts.  This recipe can be done without the walnuts.  Place 1 inch apart on the cookie sheet.  Press your thumb into the center of each ball.  This is a good time to get the kids involved and allow them to press their thumbs into the center of the ball.  Bake in oven for 10-12 minutes at 375 degrees Fahrenheit or till edges are lightly browned.  Transfer cookies to wire rack and let cool. Once cool fill centers with jam.

Pretzel Hugs:

Simply place pretzels on a lined cookie sheet (lined with wax paper.) Place a piece of chocolate on pretzel.  I like the Bliss white chocolate.  Place in oven on 350 degrees for 10 to 20 seconds.  Just long enough for the chocolate to glisten.  This is the start of the chocolate softening.  Take out of the oven and place a second pretzel on top of soft chocolate and push down.  Let cool and enjoy!

It’s a Jammin kinda day…

Happy Labor Day!  Hope ya’ll had a wonderful day off from work.  My kids and I took advantage of the time together and we started decorating the house for Fall with pumpkins, sunflowers, and scarecrows; Oh my!  We also made Raspberry Jam together.

It takes about an hour for prep time to clean up to make jam.  I just love the sweet aromas that fill the house while we are jammin. 

Recipe:

4 6oz packages of raspberries

1 tsp of vanilla

2 cups sugar

3 tbsp pectin

Mash the raspberries, mix in vanilla

sprinkle pectin in the Ball® FreshTECH Automatic Jam & Jelly Maker, spread evenly

pour in raspberries evenly

push the jam and enter buttons to start

add butter to avoid foaming

when first beep sounds slowly  pour in sugar

when final beep sounds pour jam into heated Ball Mason jars

Seal and let cool

Cascade Platinum holds the ultimate power!

Awesome turnout last night!  My friends and I got together to put Cascade Platinum to the ultimate test. We made a HUGE mess with some super cheesy mac and cheese.

Recipe for Mac and Cheese (courtesy of The Pioneer Woman)  this is the best mac and cheese ever!!!

Ingredients:

4 cups Dried Macaroni

1 whole egg beaten

1/4 cup butter

1/4 cup all-purpose flour

2-1/2 cups whole milk

2 teaspoons dry mustard

1 pound grated cheese

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:  Cook Macaroni until very firm.  Macaroni should be too firm to eat right out of the pot.  Drain.

In a small bowl, beat egg.  In a large pot, melt butter and sprinkle in flour.  Whisk together over medium-low heat.  Cook mixture for five minutes, whisking constantly.  Don’t let it burn.  Pour in milk, add mustard, and whisk until smooth  Cook for five minutes until very thick.

Reduce heat to low.  Take 1/4 cup of the sauce and slowly pour it into beaten egg, whisking constantly to avoid cooking eggs.  Whisk together til smooth.

Pour egg mixture into sauce, whisking constantly.  stir until smooth.  Add in cheese and stir to melt.  Add salt and pepper.  Taste sauce and add more salt and seasoned salt as needed!  Pour in drained, cooked macaroni and stir to combine.

Serve

Make this recipe and your taste buds will thank me!!!

There was all kind of super sticky gooey mess and some chocolatey, crumby goodness leftover.  Our plates were hopelessly dirty and some of the food had been sitting for hours.  Normally I would have to scrub the dishes to get the dried cheese and chocolate crust off.  Not this time.  I dumped out the large pieces off food and didn’t pre-rinse.  Is Cascade up for this challenge???  That is what I want to know!  So we loaded the dishwasher…

Here are some neat facts we learned along the way:

DID YOU KNOW??? There is no need to pre-wash when you use Cascade Platinum to wash your dishes. Cascade Platinum works best when food soil is left on the dishes because it special enzymes latch onto that food, breaking it down so it can wash away. If there’s no food soil, there’s nothing for the enzymes to attach to and your detergent isn’t working hardest for you.

DID YOU KNOW??? Most dishwashers have built in garbage disposals. This disposal works the same as the disposal in your sink.

DID YOU KNOW??? You should stack your dishes high and low, but making sure bulk items do not block the sprayer.

This next tip is awesome!

DID YOU KNOW???  Thread any long utensils through the coffee-mug handles to help keep them secure in the wash.

This next tip from Cascade made me think, “wow so that’s how you do that!”

DID YOU KNOW???  Set glasses between the lines on the rack NOT over them as wet contact points can cause spots.

I have been doing it all wrong for so many years!!!

So once our lil chit chat was through, it was time to check the dishwasher.  The truth of Cascade Platinum was revealed!!!  We stood around the dishwasher and when we opened the door we all stared in wow!

Candy Cane yummy tummy fun.

Tips:

Use a toaster oven and set to 250, soften chocolate and spread using back of spoon, add sprinkles, and let cool for 30 minutes to an hour before wrapping individually.  My first batch didn’t come out very well because I had the oven set to 450 and the candy cane started to melt.  My last two batches I set oven to 250 degrees Fahrenheit and it worked great.  The chocolate softened within minutes.
