Tales from the Haunted Mansion Volume 1: The Fearsome- Book Review

volume1

This book review is written by my daughter, Allison.  She is also known as Duffy’s Doodles on Instagram.

“Welcome foolish mortals, to the lonesome library of the Haunted Mansion”. In this hair raising book, you will be reading the frightening tales of the Fearsome Foursome. The Fearsome Foursome are the four main characters who try to out-spook each other with grim fictions of their own.
This blood curdling book is crafted around the narrator and librarian of the Haunted Mansion, Amicus Arcane. Arcane tells and narrates the stories of the four friends, as well as enticing the reader.
The plot of the story revolves around middle school friends Tim, Willa, Noah and Steve. With a common bond of seeking out and crafting ghost stories, the four form a club for telling of such tales of terror – The Fearsome Foursome. A mysterious accident destroys their club house and lands each with an invitation to visit a particular haunted mansion. There they meet the spirited home’s librarian Amicus Arcane. He regales them with his own tales of terror from one of the many ghostly tomes in the old library. Very special tales, about each of them.
The stories themselves, come across as fun campfire tales of terror woven around a loose connection to the Haunted Mansion itself. References (like a secondary character named Rolly) and use of familiar Haunted Mansion lines remind the reader that this IS a tome from the Mansion’s own library.
I actually was very entertained by the story line and illustrations that appear on every other page. Peppered with deliciously dark drawings (along with fun ghostly images), Amicus Arcane’s first volume is a feisty macabre read and the perfect pick for those tweens who enjoy a good ghost story. I personally would recommend the book for ages 10-13. The read is light, but can a little graphic. (But no more than a PG horror film).

5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories- a book review

Reading to my children has become a cherished pastime each and every night.  As a family we take turns reading together and acting out the scenes in the book.  It has become my favorite part of our bedtime ritual.  Our ritual begins in prayer, followed with a bible story; then we read a few books selected by my kids, lastly, one of my children will lead us in a bedtime family prayer.  _240_360_Book.1928.coverThe 5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories, as retold by Charlotte Thoroeby is a book that gets selected every night by my son.  He loves to read about Jesus and your child will too!  In this book your child will enjoy reading 26 short stories from the Creation to Jesus’ Birth and many more!  Pages are full of brightly colored illustrations and large format; making this book easy and enjoyable to read by kids of all ages.  I love that the short stories are set up as mini devotions (a great introduction for your littlest human) with a question, a small prayer, and even a scripture verse.  You will also find additives in the back of the book including: The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, a listing of all the books in the Bible, and words to Anna B Warner’s Jesus Loves Me.  This is a great way to share the stories of Jesus with your little one and is guaranteed to be a family favorite that can be read at anytime of day!

The Great Carp Escape and a giveaway!

unnamedThe Great Carp Escape is a beautiful children’s story with a deep message reminding us just how deep God’s love is for us and all living creatures.  Written by Irish Beth Maddock and based on a true story the illustrator transports the readers  to a small beach front in Canada with allegorical images of geese, weeping willow, evergreen, waves, and carp!  Your child will enjoy reading of the adventures of this dynamic sibling pair and the habits of the ocean life found along the shoreline.  Swimming, snorkling, and even clam fishing; the story quickly develops into a lifelong lesson that  Beth, Paul  (the siblings), and your own child will never forget as the children take a walk with dad.  Stumbling upon what has been defined as the ugliest fish ever seen (the carp) by Beth, their dad explains  that beauty is more then skin deep.  Our creator loves each and everyone of us and designed us with love; including the CARP.  “God thinks this fish is wonderful!”  Smiling, he added, “God thinks you’re wonderful too!”   This is my ultimate favorite line in the book.  There is so much relief in this single line, to know that above everything else that my creator thinks I am wonderful!  ” That means I am wonderfully made!” my almost teenage daughter exclaimed as I read that line aloud.  This brought a huge smile to her face and joy to her heart.  As a teenager this is a big message to receive, when everything around you seems so awkward and out of place and you question your sole purpose for belonging.  We too can find the beauty not just in this strange fish with spiny fins and large scales but every living creature if only we look through our Father’s eyes.

This is sure to be a family favorite and  will change how ya’ll view the world around you!

Thank you to Irish Beth Maddock for allowing me the opportunity to review The Great Carp Escape with a complimentary copy and allowing me to express my honest opinion.
