5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories- a book review

Reading to my children has become a cherished pastime each and every night.  As a family we take turns reading together and acting out the scenes in the book.  It has become my favorite part of our bedtime ritual.  Our ritual begins in prayer, followed with a bible story; then we read a few books selected by my kids, lastly, one of my children will lead us in a bedtime family prayer.  _240_360_Book.1928.coverThe 5-Minute Nighttime Bible Stories, as retold by Charlotte Thoroeby is a book that gets selected every night by my son.  He loves to read about Jesus and your child will too!  In this book your child will enjoy reading 26 short stories from the Creation to Jesus’ Birth and many more!  Pages are full of brightly colored illustrations and large format; making this book easy and enjoyable to read by kids of all ages.  I love that the short stories are set up as mini devotions (a great introduction for your littlest human) with a question, a small prayer, and even a scripture verse.  You will also find additives in the back of the book including: The Lord’s Prayer, The Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, a listing of all the books in the Bible, and words to Anna B Warner’s Jesus Loves Me.  This is a great way to share the stories of Jesus with your little one and is guaranteed to be a family favorite that can be read at anytime of day!

The Great Carp Escape and a giveaway!

unnamedThe Great Carp Escape is a beautiful children’s story with a deep message reminding us just how deep God’s love is for us and all living creatures.  Written by Irish Beth Maddock and based on a true story the illustrator transports the readers  to a small beach front in Canada with allegorical images of geese, weeping willow, evergreen, waves, and carp!  Your child will enjoy reading of the adventures of this dynamic sibling pair and the habits of the ocean life found along the shoreline.  Swimming, snorkling, and even clam fishing; the story quickly develops into a lifelong lesson that  Beth, Paul  (the siblings), and your own child will never forget as the children take a walk with dad.  Stumbling upon what has been defined as the ugliest fish ever seen (the carp) by Beth, their dad explains  that beauty is more then skin deep.  Our creator loves each and everyone of us and designed us with love; including the CARP.  “God thinks this fish is wonderful!”  Smiling, he added, “God thinks you’re wonderful too!”   This is my ultimate favorite line in the book.  There is so much relief in this single line, to know that above everything else that my creator thinks I am wonderful!  ” That means I am wonderfully made!” my almost teenage daughter exclaimed as I read that line aloud.  This brought a huge smile to her face and joy to her heart.  As a teenager this is a big message to receive, when everything around you seems so awkward and out of place and you question your sole purpose for belonging.  We too can find the beauty not just in this strange fish with spiny fins and large scales but every living creature if only we look through our Father’s eyes.

This is sure to be a family favorite and  will change how ya’ll view the world around you!

Thank you to Irish Beth Maddock for allowing me the opportunity to review The Great Carp Escape with a complimentary copy and allowing me to express my honest opinion.

Prayers that Changed History- a book review

worldWhere would we be today had our historical heroes not leaned on the power of prayer?  Anything is possible and when we seek guidance from Our Lord Almighty we will discover that even the impossible is possible if it is by the will of God.  Prayers that Changed History is a fantastic book that takes the reader on a historical journey.  From Christopher Columbus to Helen Keller your child will learn how God used these famous people of History to change the world.  Your child will find delight as they learn the hidden stories of some very familiar names, following each historical example is a biblical story that ties to that person’s life and actions, as well as ways you can use the power of prayer in your life as well. Because God isn’t done changing the world yet, and he would love to use you to make history.

My children enjoyed reading this book together as a family.  From my littlest ears (6) to my tween (11) the curiosity of how God uses ordinary people to make a difference in a big way made this book a page turner.

Song of the Stars- a book review

Song

On one quiet night, creation whispered a secret.  Grass and bees, robins and trees all spread the word.  Sheep told their young while angels sang the song to the shepherds.  Hushed news of a miracle echoed to the ends of the earth.  The moment had come.  The long-awaited child has arrived!  Creation cried out in celebration, but only a few people heard.  Only a few joined nature’s chorus, a song in praise of the newborn King.

Song of Stars is a beautiful rendition of the greatest story ever told; The birth of Jesus Christ!  Excitement builds as the animals and the earth eagerly awaits the coming of the messiah as a baby.  The beautiful illustrations and adorning words allow the reader to feel the exuberance of the coming of our Savior.

This is the perfect book for this Christmas season and reminds our littlest humans what the true meaning of Christmas is.
